The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit. ~Nelson Henderson

We should not burn a bridge that we never even crossed
Nor should we build something bigger when something better will be lost
But really it is about the act of doing you see life is a leap of faith
We have to sweat a little if we want to make something great
We must get our hands dirty and plant a garden or a tree
Get off that comfortable sofa and truly live what we believe
Making a difference is not just for the other guy
It is a mission that is yours and it is a mission that is mine
For in the name of progress it seems so much has been lost
And we should not build something bigger when something better will be lost.

This is dedicated to all the trees that have been cut down in the name of progress.  What a sad story it truly is.   I have always loved trees and felt they have a magnificent presence all around us.  In fact, the first poem I ever wrote was about a tree when I was 11 years old.  Yes, trees are dear to me, and since we recently celebrated arbor day, it felt fitting to write this.  The sad thing is I have never actually planted a tree with my own bare hands.  I work right inside a botanic garden center.  They gave out little trees for arbor day, and I have one now.  So guess what?  I am going to plant a tree.  Little steps they say.  I am going to get my hands dirty and make beautiful shade for my great great grandchildren.

We Trade Trees for Skyscrapers

Linking with Poets United for Midweek Motif ~ Lady Liberty and also The Sunday Muse for week #11   Come join us!

For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver. ~Martin Luther

It seems when we expand any direction something becomes smaller
like ice in a glass of water
it melts and disappears from what we see
So we trade trade trees for skyscrapers
in the name of freedom
we build in brick and mortar
high and wide
at the cost of the liberty of trees
they disappear one by one
mile by mile
acre by acre
into shopping centers and malls
one man's gain is another's loss
but in the bigger scheme of things
the loser is truly us all.

***************************************************************

Lady Liberty,

Her name is Liberty
and she is stoic like trees
head held high
standing for all that is beautiful
and all we hold dear
crowned by good
and brotherhood
we remember her name
but have forgotten
the sound of her voice.

The groves were God’s first temples. ~William Cullen Bryant, “A Forest Hymn”

We are takers
takers of the land
using what builds our mansions
using what we can
inflating egos like balloons
then building high rises and their parking lots
cement stretched out for miles
we document our accomplishments
 diploma's displayed on walls
we are takers
takers of the land
using what will build our cities
using what we can
S T O P
maybe it is time we started giving back!

The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit. ~Nelson Henderson

The Homage of Trees

Google Images

"The groves were God's first temples."
 ~William Cullen Bryant

Like baptist steeples they reach toward the skies
a choir in motion that like spirits they rise

they achieve greatness dwelling in the roots of home
a tribe in ceremony that never sways or falls alone

their lineage is founded on contentment's core
an allegiance of bonding that settles deep yet soars

freedom is held within the winds of thier dance
for their own liberty aspires right where they stand.
