"Sticks and stones are hard on bones
Aimed with angry art,
Words can sting like anything
But silence breaks the heart."
~Phyllis McGinle

Why was your love always a cadence in E minor with a sad melody quick to come to a close?
Did you not see me here with my strong voice always holding every note?

The piano that I loved is abandoned now lost and quiet like feathers when they fall.
These days the only tone that rings out is your cell phone, but it won't be me who calls.

My love would have played you an orchestra with trombones and drums as I dance and I sing.
But all you wanted was a player piano and loud sex that technically had no strings.

Rising Above

The tides are in our veins. ~Robinson Jeffers

Linking with Poet United for Midweek Motif ~Flood  hosted by Susan (Thank you Susan)

One morning in April of 2016, I woke up to look out the window and find that my apartment was in the middle of a lake.  Good thing I can swim was not my first thought...suddenly me and sailors could speak the same language and I am not talking about ship terms.  My car was in the rising waters and there was no saving it.  After a couple of days of being trapped and unable to leave on wheels there was an evacuation.

The good news is:
after applying for FEMA help
being declined
appealing and trying again
because I don't give up easily
I finally was approved
and got help to purchase a car
after 6 months of a lot of walking
and waiting for rides.
What did I learn from this?
Well, first of all it pays
to not give up.
When a door closes
God opens a window.
Sometimes hardships
can turn out to be
blessings in disguise.
No matter how bad
you think you have it
there is someone else
out there with a worse situation.
When tough times hit
people are usually very kind and giving
The lovely thing was that we met
neighbors that we would never have
seen otherwise.

Now here is my poem for the prompt:

Rising Above
but
I am Always Thirsty,

My mother always said "don't drink
any more before bed"
but I was always thirsty
and had chocolate milk instead
my life has been a flood of lessons
some learned some not
and when it rains it pours
and when it's dry
well it's just plain hot
and one thing I have learned through time
is this
love and sustenance are a constant fix
for me there is a close correlation between
water and men
sometimes they are a disaster at my door
but I sure can't live without them
and because of my deep seeded need for love
I always keep coming back for more
one drink is never enough
gotta have 8 glasses of water a day
to stay healthy that is what
the doctor's say
but sometimes I wake up
to a flood at my door
and I wish I had listened
to my mother more!

Author's Note:
The only floods truly at my door are totally rain related. :-)

Shades of Grey

Google Images

Life is life, and death is life, and everything in between. ~Terri Guillemets

Its all about the shades in between.  Nothing is completely black and white.  We draw the lines in black and the areas around are white but there is always shades of grey that connect the two and in the world of sketching where one tries to portray what they see, it is all about knowing what not to fill in and what to accentuate.
Then there are the tools that help us do this.  The pencils of life that fill the page, and the erasers that help when there is a mistake.  One line connecting to the next in form to complete a picture for all to see.   So how we depict the artistry and what the world ends up seeing is ultimately at the end of our own pencils edge.
 Hold it how you will.

The Mistress and a Man

"What is to give light must endure burning."  ~Viktor Frankl

We hold a certain attraction the two of us.
I need to be needed and you need too much.

My light keeps reaching without falter or rest
as you love the luxury of being my returning guest.

To be your beacon is what I always yearn
yet I am the recipient of my constant burn.

We have a certain attraction like a light and a moth
for I long to sustain you, but you cannot be caught.

No I am not having an affair with a married man.  I just thought that the wording in first person held more power.  The picture represented a painful relationship to me and I went with it in this direction.  That's my story and I am sticking to it.

What do you see when you look at the prompt?

Drifting Apart

"We sail within a vast sphere, ever drifting in uncertainty,
driven from end to end."
~Blaise Pascal

We were two different countries
within the same continent you and I.

Your ways were not my own,
although we stood there side by side.

My gravel roads led to your winding highways
that seemed to never end,

and I knew where you were going
just as you understood where I had been.

Yet somewhere between the new frontier
and old roads in need of repair,

an ocean grew amidst this continent
like the shifting plates of hearts and cares.

I have married twice and both times it has been a process much like shifting plates of the earth crust.  The ground has shifted beneath my feet, and I have been unable to remain in the place that I once stood.  I guess I could look at it as a loss or an utter failure, but I choose not to.  I have learned more from these 2 different and both difficult men than they will have ever truly learned from me.  I have come to understand that there is no perfect person and we are all products of our past and the places we come from.  We do not get to have a road map of the human heart.  I only know that  I love them both and always will.  Yes that sounds crazy, but I have always believed that if you truly love someone, and I am not talking about romantic love, I am speaking of the love that one has for a fellow human being in this life, then that love never ends nor stops.  You cannot turn love off like water in a faucet, nor should you even try, but you can learn from relationships good or bad and you can hope to make better decisions moving forward in the future.

The Strongest Strand

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
~Mother Teresa

We stand together an assortment of pearls tightly strung in place
embracing hope's truest strand longing for something greater in the end
but when our clasp together catches on the snags of life we rip apart
scattering in all dirrections yet unlike the pearl that gets lost amongst
the rubble underneath a couch never to be found
man makes his way back
fastening together
thread to stone
hand to hand
one heart
at a
time.

I have always been fascinated by the way that mankind has so many different cultures, traditions and beliefs, and yet, ultimately,we are all truly the same.  We nurture and adore our children ,work in some way to put food on the table, and long to make a difference in our sphere of influence.  We are worlds apart, yet as close knit as jewels on a strand.  Humanity, not matter how diverse, truly is an emblem of the bonds of the heart.
