What is the city but the people?  ~William Shakespeare

Our Grandfathers and their city of lights now sleep
For his children are now behind closed doors
But there are sons and there are daughters
That are out there doing so much more
They are knelt out in the thick of it
Healing sickness and easing a great loss
Doing what they can out there for others
No matter how great the cost
They are the true heroes of the cities
Out on the beat reaching out a mighty hand
Bravely facing danger and disease
To truly help out their fellow man.

Dedicated to the men and women out in the cities,
All the doctors, nurses, the police, grocery store and pharmacy workers, mail carriers, amazon employees, restaurants workers providing curbside service, and all the true heroes that are out there helping everyone in communities all over the world.
Thank you!!!!!!

Added note on the image of Jack Kerouac:
He was considered a literary iconoclast and a pioneer of the “Beat Generation”.   I find Jack’s life to be quite fascinating, but was moved most by the loss of his brother Gerard who died at the mere age of nine to rheumatic fever.  They say it had a deep impact on Jack’s life, who would later say that Gerard followed him in life as his own guardian angel.

  1. No one is ore deserving of this tribute poem than the real every day heroes who are keeping us all fed and safe and as well as possible. I love how you tied it in with Jack, and especially the information about his brother, which I may have known, but if I did, I had forgotten. How sad to lose a youngster like that, especially when he was a youngster himself.

  2. Those are the true heroes, for sure, and they are rising up everywhere. The best side of human nature, showing itself in difficult times. The other day, a video was posted on facebook of women doctors in Toronto's hospital (the hardest hit in Canada) singing We Rise Again - made me cry so hard. What amazing courage, and light. I didnt know that about Kerouac losing his brother......I love that he felt he was with him as a guardian angel after.

  4. This is a wonderful tribute to those "responders" and workers who keep our bodies safe and to the modern Kerouac's who mind our spirits and help keeping us sane in times like never before in our lives.
Kerouac was older a bit than me but so were some of my friends. Our too much younger, especially the girls. We were different those days, a lot I will never tell but that i don't regret. I was ...

  6. They are the true heroes, indeed. It's takes a special kind of heart and determination to continue to do one's job and to assist others when the world is such a mess. May they all be safe.

  7. Jack, Allen, and the venerable Mr Ferlinghetti are the reason(s) I started writing poetry (ages ago). We owe so much to the health-care heroes, not to mention all the others who do what they do to help save the rest of us who have far less to offer.

  8. They need all the respect we have to give them -- and that includes making sure they have access to all the material they need (masks, gloves, etc.). I am thankful for their hard work and dedication in this horrific time.

  9. Yes, it's easy to lose your focus on who is really important out there in this political climate, and with the fear and unrest everywhere, conditions I feel Kerouac would have strongly reacted to as you have, to praise those who are the strength in this country right now, who continue to do what is expected of them and beyond with grace and courage. I feel so for those men and women and their families, who are living with the very worst of this disease. Thanks for this poem of gratitude.

  19. My favorite line of his: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." I feel like he can write a whole novel from this line alone. ;-) The book could be his counter tribute to those people suffering from cabin fever. The working title? "In the House".

  20. A moving tribute to the men and women who are selflessly risking their lives everyday, often without the necessary equipment, mere lambs to the slaughter. I do hope they have guardian angels watching over them.
