The Great Passing of The Torch

"And so our mothers and grandmothers have, more often than not anonymously, handed on the creative spark, the seed of the flower they themselves never hoped to see - or like a sealed letter they could not plainly read."  ~Alice Walker

They were the pillars that held it all together
from full plate to empty nest
they carried us through
in ice or fire's storm
and great depression's wake
holding a hidden strength
that needed no
light to grow
they the true
steel magnolias
never expected
a return for
their favor
for the
legacy of
a grandmother's
wisdom
cannot be
returned
only
swiftly
passed
down
to
the
grand
mothers
our
daughters
will
someday
be.

  8. This is one of my favorite topics, grandmas passing on the torch of their indomitable spirit.

I loved this, Carrie. My grandma raised five kids through the depression and had non of the things we take for granted - she washed the laundry by hand in the bathtub - for five kids - lived in the freezing-cold Prairies. And once gave my grandpa's best suit to a hobo because he didnt wear it much so she thought he didnt need it. Turns out he kept it for best. And he only had two suits. Hee hee. Wonderful poem! Took me back.

  9. Oh All those ancestor women of ours had to go through so that today we have all we have.
This is a great poem and tribute to them all, Carrie. Shame that still in some parts of the world they have no rights at all...

PS-I am fine... and I hope so are you!
Thanks for your comment today and sorry I haven't come by lately
    :)
