“Strange how we decorate pain.”

― Margaret Atwood

A child carries a broken heart a certain way

much differently than an old man can

he does not hide it behind a curtain nor door

where no one else is allowed to stand

he bravely holds it out in the open

bare like feet out in the rain

stepping out in the puddled path

vulnerable yet willing to show the pain

for a broken heart can hold so many things

It can take in all that is hurt and lost

keeping it safe and nestled close

like a sheltered bird at freedom’s cost

the homeless sleep there with nowhere else to rest

how do you send away such a hurting soul?

the walls are lined with a menagerie of relics

heavy with the silence of tales untold

and a child will tell and sing the songs

with every fall that scrapes his knees and heart

but with time he learns to hush the cry

like an old man who cannot hear the breaking news at dark

for the fool will hold on like a warden and his keys

never letting go of hurt till the day he dies

but the wiser one will unlock the cage

and he will simply let that birdy fly!

Bittersweet

Linking with the Sunday Muse for the BIG 99th prompt hosted by the utterly amazing poet Shay!
Come join us!.

Love is a sweet tyranny, because the lover endureth his torments willingly. ~Proverb

We all begin whole
Ruby red cheeked
No scrapes nor bruises
Light with the seeds of hope
Held by the hands of love
Yet later that same love is also
The hand that slices us to the core.

Flowers Do Grow In The Rain

You ask why life has so many tears
why life's road is always rough?...
but with each day and every year
we learn another lesson about love.

Sometimes the path we choose
can seem to be too hard...
but how much more can we loose
with just one more broken heart?

A finished diamond ring
is not beautiful all my itself...
it cannot do a thing
without the polish cutter's help.

Going up mountains and over hills
we are running into walls...
we cannot learn the growing skill
until we learn to fall.

A heart like a flower grows
and reaches for the stars...
but our eyes do not always know
the necessity of lifes scars.

Some flowers along the beaten path
are hidden among the weeds...
the rain showers they must have
are what help the many planted seeds.

Sometimes it takes hitting a valley low
to make us finally look up...
at times only a heartache's blow
can make us feel true love.

You ask why there is so much sorrow
why does life give us so much pain?...
but too much sunshine provides no rainbow,
for flowers do grow in the rain.

A Certain Suffering

"Sometimes my greatest sufferings in life have been like wearing stiletto heels, on the outside things look sharp and smooth, but on the inside my bunnions are crying for relief!"

Shiny and elegant is a stiletto heel, but frankly I don't like the way they feel.   I will take tennis shoes any day,  so I can move forward in comfort all the way.

I am no stranger to heartache, no one is, but I have found as time goes by, that holding on to the worries and struggles trying to fix them on my own only turns into creating more worries.  It is only when I let go, and rely on God's support, that I am able to find true comfort, and release.  Sometimes you just have to take the stiletto heels off, and take comfort in the humble simplicity of life that is all we need:
The grace of God.

The Cautious Gardener

An elegant crystal vase was gingerly stored on a hidden shelf in a paramount place.
Someone did not want a prize so precious to be disturbed or break.

These same prudent hands plant artificial roses in a real flower bed.
Her worn heart could not bear watering and tending just to risk one day finding them dead.

There are different degrees of loss; those we loose by chance, and the ones we loose by choice.
Both  hurtful, like a thorn, but one steals the experience of the rose and all it's joys.

The Stab That Does Not Kill

Magpie #19
They say that a paper cut hurts worse than a stab, and Mr. Hoffman knew first hand that was right.
For he was watching his lawyer and Mrs. Hoffman's, slowly divide both their lives.
The sting of the silences had torn loves core, and emptied the words that were left.
Leaving a woman he once held, filled with morsels of regret.
Now its down to a mortgage, a dog, 3 kids, and 2 cars.
While he is left with regrets of his own, and a broken heart.
Afterwards he will lay with a remote control, and a dog on a roll out bed,
with regrets slicing torment inside of his head.
For these things were the culprit that gave the stabbing blow.
That have left him to live as half the man he had once known.

A great site for writers  Magpie Tales

"Do you know the most surprising thing about divorce? It doesn't actually kill you. Like a bullet to the heart or a head-on car wreck. It should. When someone you've promised to cherish till death do you part says "I never loved you," it should kill you instantly."  ~Frances, from Under The Tuscan Sun

Her Melancholy Eyes,

Her melancholy eyes are like a stagnant forgotten pool. It's deep reflection draws you in like a mirage is to a fool.
It is a mysterious journey into a lifetime of pain with just a glance, somewhere between a world of woe, and a moment of a chance.
If you follow where they lead, there is no turning back. The load you carry will be greater, and you will miss more all you lack.
You must break free from this deep pool before your own demise,
for if you are not careful, you will drown in her melancholy eyes.
