The groves were God’s first temples. ~William Cullen Bryant, “A Forest Hymn”

We are takers
takers of the land
using what builds our mansions
using what we can
inflating egos like balloons
then building high rises and their parking lots
cement stretched out for miles
we document our accomplishments
 diploma's displayed on walls
we are takers
takers of the land
using what will build our cities
using what we can

maybe it is time we started giving back!

The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit. ~Nelson Henderson

  2. Wonderful, Carrie. It reminded me of Israel, in the Jerusalem, back in the Bible days. They had plenty of trees at one time but by then the trees were all used up. There still aren't a bunch of trees in parts of the country.

  4. We need to give back as much as we can... plant a tree instead of parking lots.

  5. I can only echo what the others before me said - an amazing take on the prompt. And I love the intensity of the lines, left me breathless.

  7. I agree-so, much has been reaped from what was once sowed. It is sad and time to do things differently~ I love your poem and this quote.
