Time is an old firmly rooted tree; we are the breeze rustling its leaves.

Time is a prudent yet swift bird
that we all truly long to catch.
Though the feathers that it flies with
carry it ever further beyond our grasp.
We rush awkwardly forward
as it touches back down upon a branch
and we reach out in a hurry
but still with a backward glance.
For no nets nor loaded guns
can catch this bird in hovered flight.
It tarries not for no beast nor human
as it takes each hour soft within the night.

Great metaphorical use of the bird, Carrie. I had never looked at time this way but your poem gives me food for thought. And indeed it is a bird that no nets or guns can catch.
ReplyDeletehmmm...lovely. I think we spend too much time trying to catch the bird instead of enjoying its flight.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful poem, Carrie, but when I reached the last stunning line I went "ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhh" - it is so incredibly perfect.
ReplyDeleteTruly said!
ReplyDeletehow true..that bird beyond our reach..teases us and then we slowly get into its grasp...wow..a wonderful poem Carrie..
ReplyDeleteExquisite. I love the quote you took as a jumping off point and I have a weakness for poetry that uses birds or allusion to birds. They represent so much.
ReplyDeleteI like your comparison to time as a bird that cannot be stopped or captured....a great perspective. I too love birds and especially enjoyed your poem today.
ReplyDeleteoh that is a lovely image for time... so dreamy and magical
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of time as a bird. This is lovely!
ReplyDeleteThis is just exquisite - and timeless. A lovely piece.
ReplyDeleteDelicately beautiful!
ReplyDeletethe last line made me sigh.
ReplyDeleteLoved this metaphorical verse ... beautiful indeed :-)
