It Was A Beautiful Sloppy Mess

It Must Be Time For Lunch Now, 1979, by Francesca Woodman

"Truth isn't always beauty, but the hunger for it is."  ~Nadine Gordimer

When I was a child
 I spooned life in
like banana pudding
never caring how much
spilled on my hands and face.

I took in all the answers
like a hungry lover
longing for her love's
next embrace.

My quest for truth and meaning
was enduring
yet clumsy
 with an awkward flair

I chewed up all my questions
with my mouth wide open
and crumbs wild in my hair.

Yet somewhere between
life's wonderful lunches
 and disappointment's feast

I lost my unkept hunger
and grew fat on complacency
learning to be discreet.

  1. Why, oh why ... must we grow up? Your poem is deep, full of emotion and meaning, Carrie.

  5. I too have gotten fat on complacency, but lately I am getting leaner. Jumping back in and chewing on it and letting the crumbs fall. This is a great write!

  6. Yes this is a great write. Apart from growing fat on complacency, I love:

    "with my mouth wide open
and crumbs wild in my hair"

This conjours up a child not caring about anything except facts - grasping at knowledge and not letting go.

  13. May we never get to the point where we think we have all the answers--where will we find the wonder that makes life a joy? This is a fine piece, a pleasure to read. Thanks for visiting over at my place.

  15. I like this a lot. I wonder when we lose the gusto, gobbling life with vigor, and replace it with complacency.

  16. Ah, yes; "learning to be discreet." And nice. And compliant. The things that society tells us we "must" do; the half-truths, the outright violations.

Time to recover "life's wonderful lunches" even if that also means returning to "disappointment's feast."
