Change Is Like A River

image: River Irwell by R.A.D. Stainforth

Nothing that is can pause or stay;
The moon will wax, the moon will wane,
The mist and cloud will turn to rain,
The rain to mist and cloud again,
Tomorrow be today.
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Change is like a river where the waters do not remain.
It is not a stagnant pool that reeks in summer rain.

It bears a current that has an everlasting flow.
Its' travels glimpse adventure that no pond can ever know.

The voyage is at times arduous as life can often prove.
The obstacles in motion can certainly leave a lasting bruise

Yes change is like a river where the waters never cease,
for this life is an endless journey of lessons to be seen.

Change is a word that we rarely are happy to hear.  It could mean we will receive some coins in our pocket, but all too often it may be our comfort zone is about to be swept away, like a fallen hat in a raging river.  It is something we can avoid, and we do despise at times, but without it we would never experience growth in our lives.  We can resist it like a branch in an opening of a small canal, but the more we fight it the more painfull the process becomes.  If we could learn to go with the flow, like a boat in a river, we might just find that the journey of diversity can have a beautiful view on the horizon.

  1. Much wisdom in your words today..I love the comparison of change being like a flowing river, not a stagnant pond! Yes, without change the bad would remain as easily as the good! Change proves who we are by how we adapt! Change is bearable because of the Changeless One!

  6. Guard well your heart, for if your smart.
You will see that change is free, but only wisdom, will guide your feet.
To be that change that needs to be.

For not all change is good you see.
and only he has set you free.
To be that change that needs to be.

I loved this post :) I have just been made more aware lately that all change is not necessarily good.
But we still have to have a good attitude, and wisdom in dealing with it. For all things work together for good for them that know and love him. :)

  9. We're fast approaching the date my mother passed away ~ five years ago. We played a CD for her in the last few weeks of her life, a Mormon Tabernacle Choir CD, one of the songs was about a river ... your poem brought back those memories - in a vivid flashback. Not horrifically sad, I promise.

  13. It's easy to get "stuck" but I agree that if we all go with the flow, embrace change and have faith that things will go as God plans.

  17. Change - embrace it and it will be easier as you go along. Didn't someone once said that the only permanent thing in this world is change?
