We Trade Trees for Skyscrapers

Linking with Poets United for Midweek Motif ~ Lady Liberty and also The Sunday Muse for week #11   Come join us!

For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver. ~Martin Luther

It seems when we expand any direction something becomes smaller
like ice in a glass of water
it melts and disappears from what we see
So we trade trade trees for skyscrapers
in the name of freedom
we build in brick and mortar
high and wide
at the cost of the liberty of trees
they disappear one by one
mile by mile
acre by acre
into shopping centers and malls
one man's gain is another's loss
but in the bigger scheme of things
the loser is truly us all.

***************************************************************

Lady Liberty,

Her name is Liberty
and she is stoic like trees
head held high
standing for all that is beautiful
and all we hold dear
crowned by good
and brotherhood
we remember her name
but have forgotten
the sound of her voice.

An Extravagant Parade

image: epic mahoney

"All progress is precarious, and the solution of one problem brings us face to face with another problem."
~Martin Luther King, Jr.

We march forward with ungraceful steps like cattle unto a trough.
It is an awkward parade that in drought and rain knows not when to stop.
The further we go the faster the pace, and the more extravagant is the cost.
For in the parade of progress pieces of humanity can get lost.

This week I was not able to get on the internet this weekend, so I had a friend describe the picture to me on the phone.  She did a wonderful job describing it to me, but somehow I visioned the man riding his bike in the desert heading to a neon lit phonebooth, and progress and its affects came to mind.  So that is why I went with  the progress parade.  After actually seeing the picture this morning, I think I could have gone other directions with it, but like progress there is no turning back for me now.  Hope everyone has a wonderful Monday. :-)

The Slow Dance of Progress

It sways and reaches out like branches of a tree.
Ablaze with growth with flames that lap up all they see.

It's fervor kindles and molds forth like a lover's yearning embrace.
Creating something more that what once took it's place.

But in the gradual process of moving forward, pipes get rusty and foundations sway.
What we will not salvage, we choose to tear down and replace.

Gravel roads become cement byways.  There are parking lots where once was a grassy knoll.
Man's grand architecture is a hustle that steps on many toes.

It is two steps forward and then 3 steps back to the beat of fleeting time.
An awkward dance of stumbling that only man could design.

The true struggle of progression is where all of nature pays the ultimate cost.
For in all that man strives to gain, there is always something lost.
