Shades of Grey

Google Images

Life is life, and death is life, and everything in between. ~Terri Guillemets

Its all about the shades in between.  Nothing is completely black and white.  We draw the lines in black and the areas around are white but there is always shades of grey that connect the two and in the world of sketching where one tries to portray what they see, it is all about knowing what not to fill in and what to accentuate.
Then there are the tools that help us do this.  The pencils of life that fill the page, and the erasers that help when there is a mistake.  One line connecting to the next in form to complete a picture for all to see.   So how we depict the artistry and what the world ends up seeing is ultimately at the end of our own pencils edge.
 Hold it how you will.

  1. his is a very effective metaphor, Carrie. Yes, we hold the pencil and others will interpret what we have drawn, as if we understand our own intentions.

  3. Life is a shade of grey . . . yet there are so many differing intensities from dark to light . . . . which one is the right one?

  4. "at the end of our own pencil's edge. Hold it how you will." This is great, Carrie.

  6. interesting thoughts
but the eraser doesn't really erase
    and the resulting smudges
stay at the edge of perception
    forever

  8. I think the importance to understand the grey tones is probably the key for a happy life.. it's not in shining white or charcoal black.. but everything inbetween.

  9. Precisely Carrie! The artist toys around with brushes and canvas or pencil and paper letting life's experiences lead the way. Whatever images are all the while in his mind where others do not see. What comes later are revered. It is a satisfaction!

  10. You are so right about how the grey is often overlooked due to the black and white. Great job, Carrie :-)

  11. I once lived a life that demanded black and white. I came away wounded. Yes, we hold the pencil. There are times beauty blossoms in gray.

  15. Nicely said, Carrie. I had two thoughts.
Our minds like to see one choice or another, one way or another, etc.

But in real life there is an in-between, a nearness sometimes, other area smack dab in the middle. I always have a 'Plan B', many are irritated that I don't accept that it will always be one way.

The other remembered item is an artist telling newbies how to color in shades of gray with monotone color. Make a series of lines in within the border, be it real or imaginary. The closer the lines the darker will be perceived. I think this is the intensity of thought, seen by eyes and felt with the brain. Reverse the process for making/painting the scene.

  16. A wonderful extended metaphor - beautifully sketched (I couldn't resist going there). The "shades in between" has set my mind to ruminating. I don't know if I wholeheartedly agree with the expression: perception is everything. But I do agree that it is a lot "and what the world ends up seeing is ultimately at the end of our own pencils edge" . . . so true.

  17. Carrie,

A superb view of life for each individual. We have the basics given to us, but we, must expand and fill the years of living with all the adventure and the hassles, life will toss in our directions. I would add a few rainbows, just for luck!!
    Best wishes, Eileen

  19. Most of life is a shade of grey, occasionally black, occasionally white . . but sometimes if we are extremely lucky splashed here and there with exciting colours . . . Eddie :)
