Hope Leaps Like a Fox in Winter

Love must be as much a light as a flame. ~Henry David Thoreau

My weary hands ache

from all the holding on

and the letting go

that is the cost of greedy hands

 and a hasty heart

there was once a time

when you were the warmth to my winter

the flame my hands held close to

but fast fires can only burn so long

the burning house sooner or later falls to ash

a rubble one must walk away from

the season comes and goes

but my heart always hopes for more

it leaps like a fox in winter

and holds tight to all it finds

it can be a heavy burden

in the loss of letting go.

  3. Wow, Carrie. I just posted mine and am rather astounded at how our hearts found the same pathway - the leaping fox heart , "you were the warmth to my winter." So glad I didnt read yours till I had written mine. Yours says it so much better.

  4. I like the progression, the hands grow weary trying to please the heart which takes charge and tries to carry on for the sake of love. My take.

  5. The hottest fires are the first to flame out, so they say. I've found it to be true.

  6. Reading this, it gave the fox's leap a sense of relief that just further wearies; a moving progression.

  13. The poem speaks to me in the voice of Life; arrival, departure and the weariness in between. Very beautifully put. Thanks for the prompt to inspire me a few lines :)
